Garth Gayle advises young athletes

Garth GayleGarth Gayle, the honorary secretary at the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA), has issued a word of advice to young athletes, urging them to stay away from performance enhancing drugs.

Gayle was speaking on Friday at the Launch of the Tyser Mills Development Track and Field meet to be held on December 11 at G.C Foster College in Spanish Town.

The man who managed Jamaica's contingent to the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne Australia spoke to the athletes about the importance of knowing what is entering their bodies. " Be careful as to what is entering your body," he said "and make sure your coaches are aware as
well."

He also pointed out the importance of young athletes being in a position to understand what substances and supplements they can or cannot take.

The Tyser Mills Development Meet is in its fourth year and is named after the
former St Catherine High principal Joan Tyser Mills who contributed 37 years of service to the school.

Over 35 high schools have already confirmed their participation for the event including former boys champions Calabar and Jamaica College as well as top female school Vere Technical.

In the past year, more than eight Jamaicans, Shelly-Ann Fraser, Bobbie-Gaye Wilkins, Yohan Blake, Allodin Fothergill, Sheri-Ann Brooks, Marvin Anderson and Lanceford Spence, along with Chris Williams have returned positive findings. Williams and Wilkins are serving a 2-year ban while Fraser has six weeks left on her six-month suspension. The others, like Fraser, received six-month bans.
